Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if counseling will help me?

I believe that everyone can benefit from counseling. Having someone outside your immediate circle—a trained confidential professional—offers a unique kind of support. It’s a chance to feel seen, heard, and understood by a professional who can hold space and listen with an empathetic ear with the skills to uncover and bring awareness to any blind spots you might not have considered.

Counseling is beneficial when you are facing anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship challenges, or significant life transitions. Counseling provides a safe, non-judgmental space to explore your experiences, thoughts, and emotions. Counselors are trained to hear, see, and bring awareness to limiting beliefs, assumptions, and perceptions that can create unhelpful and unhealthy patterns and choices, causing clients to feel stuck, unhappy, and distressed.

During our complimentary session, we’ll discuss your goals, concerns, and what you hope to achieve. Together, we’ll see if counseling is the next step for you.

What should I expect during the first session?

During your first session, we will review the forms you completed online prior to your session and address any questions you might have about the consent forms, confidentiality, policies/procedures, and fees. Moving on, we will review your intake forms and spend time getting to know you —your history, current challenges, and goals for therapy. We’ll also discuss my counseling style and address any questions you have for me. This session is designed to help you feel comfortable, allow us to get to know one another, and begin building a therapeutic relationship, offering you the support you need to accomplish your goals.

How long does therapy take?

The length of therapy varies based on each client’s specific goals, how often you can meet, and how dedicated you are to the therapeutic process.  Some clients progress significantly in a few months, while others benefit from longer-term support.  Many clients will reach specific goals, pause their counseling for months or years, and return when needed. Others reach their goals and prefer to schedule sessions every few months to check in for support as they progress with their goals and healing process. Together, we’ll create a plan that works for you.

What types of therapy do you offer?

I take a holistic approach to counseling and use a variety of evidence-based approaches, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), narrative therapy, somatic techniques, and trauma-informed methods, including Brain spotting. For women who have endured betrayal trauma, I am trained in APSATS with the Multi-Dimensional Partner Trauma Model. For couples seeking pre-marital counseling or couples counseling, I’m trained in the Gottman Method Couples Therapy. In all my work, clients will most likely experience some coaching/teaching techniques when helpful.

As Maya Angelou once said, “When we know better, we do better.”

Life is wonderful, and it is hard. The truth is, we don’t know what we don’t know. I believe we are never too old to learn new ways of being that can make life a little bit sweeter and a lot more joyful!

Is therapy confidential?

Everything we discuss in therapy is confidential, with a few exceptions required by law. These exceptions are listed in the Colorado statutes, C.R.S. §12-245-220, and in the informed consent form you will sign before your first session. As a mandated reporter, I am legally obligated to break confidentiality for:  harm to self or others, abuse or neglect of a minor or vulnerable adult, and a court order for records or testimony.

Do you accept insurance or Medicaid?

Yes, I do accept Medicaid. I work with CCHA and Colorado Access.

Do you work with adolescents or young adults?

Yes, I work with older adolescents (15-17) and young adults (18-40), helping them navigate self-esteem, life transitions, professional goals, relationships, and personal growth.

How often will we meet, and how long are the sessions?

Typically, sessions are weekly and last 50 minutes. I offer individual extended sessions when necessary and intensives for couples in crisis. The frequency can be adjusted based on your needs and progress.

How do I know if you’re the right therapist for me?

Finding a therapist that you connect with is extremely vital to your success.  You will know within the first session if you feel a connection with a therapist that allows you to feel comfortable sharing about yourself and your story.  I offer a complimentary session to discuss your needs and see if you feel comfortable talking with me. Research states that the therapeutic relationship is more important than the therapist’s education or techniques. From my personal experience, I have found this to be so true. Take your time and find a therapist you like and connect with.

I am concerned about seeing a counselor via video instead of in-person. Does online telehealth work?

If you have not had a good experience with online video counseling, it is understandable that you have questions. When I started as a life coach in 2012, the modality was by phone only, no videos. I have years of experience connecting with my clients without being in person. Now that we can connect via video, more clients value the reduced stress of managing counseling sessions in their busy schedules. Many clients feel more comfortable talking about hard or emotional things from the comfort of their homes. Others don’t want to take the time to drive to and from my office and state they prefer taking time for themselves after a session before re-entering the world vs driving right after the session. If my office is not convenient for you, but you feel like I would be a good fit, I would encourage you to schedule an online, complimentary session and try it. So many clients didn’t think they would like it, but now they love it and have never come into my office.
